The reaction of calcium carbide and water in the acetylene generator produces acetylene, which is washed with water and absorbed by sodium hypochlorite to remove impurities. The purified acetylene is fully dried and enters the fluorination reactor. Acetylene reacts with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of sulfonyl fluoride to produce crude difluoroethane. Crude difluoroethane is compressed and fractionated to obtain finished products. The product can also be derived from the reaction of 1,1-dichloroethane with hydrogen fluoride.
